The Rongai Route is the only trail approaching Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. Known for its remote and less-crowded experience, this route offers a quieter ascent with gentle slopes and stunning wilderness views, making it ideal for those seeking tranquility and a more gradual climb.
Starting in dry farmland and pine forests, Rongai ascends through moorland and alpine desert, passing Mawenzi Peak before joining the Marangu trail for the final summit push. It is one of the easier routes with good acclimatization, especially on longer itineraries, and offers unique northern perspectives of the mountain.
Perfect during the rainy season due to its drier northern side, Rongai provides excellent wildlife sightings early on and a peaceful camping adventure to Uhuru Peak – the Roof of Africa.
